Meet Rules and Expectations
Middle School Math Meets
A meet consists of six problems, presented two at a time. For each problem, the student must provide an answer in the form required by the question, and the student must circle the answer.
The student’s score is the number of questions he or she answered correctly.
The school’s score is the sum of its top four student scores.
Students are to provide their own pencils and calculators. Any non-QWERTY calculator (same rules as the SAT) is permitted.
A student is not to sit at the same table with other students from his or her school.
Coaches: Call the host school at least three days before the meet to tell them your school is coming and to tell them the number of students you are bringing. We expect no more than 20 students from each school; obtain permission from the host before brining more than 20 students to a meet.
A meet consists of eight problems, presented two at a time.
All participants will do the four “C” problems, appropriate for all high school mathematics students. In addition, “A” league participants do 4 “A” problems, which may employ topics and language from mathematics courses up to and including precalculus. “B” league participants do 4 “B” problems which do not involve topics and language from courses above algebra and geometry.
For each problem, the student must circle the answer. Answers must be exact answers, given in simplest form, with reduced radicals, reduced fractions and in terms of pi, as necessary, unless a problem specifically calls for a decimal approximation.
The student’s score is the number of questions he or she answered correctly.
The team’s score is the sum of its top four student scores.
Students are to provide their own pencils and calculators. Any non-QWERTY calculator (same rules as the SAT) is permitted.
A student is not to sit at a table with other students from his or her school.
At the conclusion of each meet, each coach must submit a complete, neatly written sheet, with both the first and last name for each participant, so that cumulative scores for individuals and for school teams can be kept accurately.
Coaches: A team consists of ten or fewer students. Thus, a school bringing both an A and a B team can bring up to 20 students. If you wish to bring more than 20 students, please call the host school at least three days before the meet to see if their space can accommodate these extra students. Those extra students will be non-team participants; each team roster of ten must be set at the beginning of the meet.
