New writer for High School Math Meet Questions:
Dr. V. N. Murthy, recently
retired Professor of Statistics, at the
Harrisburg branch of Penn State (and Syamala’s brother-in-law), is interested
in writing the questions. Syamala will contact Joan Reinthaler with his e-mail
address. Joan will present guidelines with regard to the questions and they
will work out the logistics.
Date change: The last meeting scheduled for April 23 will be changed to
April 30. Location stays the same: St. Stephen’s /St. Agnes.
Topic: Geometry
Steve O’Keefe from Edmund Burke
School sent an e-mail which sparked the discussion. Ann Lawrence brought her
lap top and shared some Middle School activities. Geometer’s Sketchpad provides
a dynamic platform for exploring
geometric ideas, and Middle School is a wonderful time for taking advantage of
the natural energy and interest of the age level. Joan Reinthaler shared her
knowledge of Exeter’s Math program. She thought the web site was
math.exeter.edu, and she suggested checking out the site since they are generous
in sharing their program. The problems that have been “created” generate the
content of the course.
Further discussion will be
tabled until next year when this topic will reappear on the agenda to be
discussed in a larger forum.
Respectfully submitted,
Judith Knight
