Minutes of Meeting at St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes, April 28, 2004

Present:  Doug Adams, Gail Johnson, Kathy McLean, and Suzanne Nucholls, St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes; Karen Michalowicz, Langley; Beth Cole, St. Patrick’s; Ayana Touval, Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School; Kathleen Glines, Edmund Burke; Betsy Bennett, St. Albans; Susan Harris, Queen Anne; Cindy Goldman, Sidwell Friends; Margaret Coffey, Bishop Ireton; and Paul Penniman, private tutor.

  1. We all started to explain why none of us are suitable to succeed Ayana and Syamala as president of ISMAW.  For example, Sue is retiring, and Margaret is moving to St. Andrew’s of Delaware.  Finally Beth and Karen agreed to be co-pres.!

  1. There was a discussion about the most recent upper school meet at Bishop Ireton.  The kite problem was re-examined, and a St. Albans student had his solution credited with a point.  The point totals will be changed!  Your loyal secretary has Betsy’s solution and explanation if you would like a copy.

  1. We made some changes to the proposed meetings and meets for next year; rides to and from subways will be available!  Visit www.mathteachingtoday/sched05.htm for the final schedule.

  1. An new upper school meet writer was sought.  Since the meeting, Betsy has found someone, a St. Albans alumnus named George Maasry.  Betsy and your loyal secretary have offered to help George.

  1. Paul passed around his new TI-84, which Beth correctly described as a TI-83 plus plus.  For those of you keeping score, St. Albans requires a TI-83 for algebra II, Bishop Ireton requires any graphing calculator for honors geometry, St. Patrick’s requires the graphing calculator for 8th grade, and Sidwell for 9th grade (alg. II).

  1. Good math books (for reading pleasure):  Karen recommends a book about the French meridian set during the Revolution.  Betsy recommends John Darbyshire’s Prime Obsession (about Riemann hypothesis), perfect for a post-BC kid, or any of Bill Dunham’s books.

  1. Margaret would like a driving companion for the Exeter summer institute.  Your loyal secretary offered to map a route but not actually go . . . .

Meeting was adjourned; have a great summer!
