This just in: John Mahoney has done it again. The Banneker High math teacher teamed with fellow biology teacher Kim S. Ables to be one of three nationwide winners in a competition for innovative epidemiology curriculum, combining statistics and biology to study inner city epidemics.
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) has started an on-line journal of school mathematics, called "ON-Math," with features for grades K-12. John Mahoney, who occasionally writes for ON-Math, says there are downloadable applets, which sounds good to us. You can find ON-Math here.
Speaking of the Web, Evelyn Vuko wrote an interesting article in the December 24, 2002 Washington Post on discalculia, the official name for difficulty with math, particularly arithmetic. Finally, in social notes from all over, we could not help but notice two wedding announcements. One was that of Daniel Rubenstein, former math teacher at the Sidwell Friends School and SEED Public Charter School, who married Melanie Fischer, and the other announcement was the marriage of Margaret Donegan, daughter of longtime area math teacher Martha Donegan, to James Sylvan. Congratulations everyone!
